Karnak Temple, Egypt

The Karnak Temple Complex, near modern Luxor in Upper Egypt, is one of the largest religious complexes in the ancient world. Its construction began as early as the Middle Kingdom around 2000 BC and continued through the New Kingdom and later periods, with many pharaohs adding to its temples, pylons, chapels, and enclosures. The complex is dedicated principally to the Theban triad Amun, Mut, and Khonsu, with Amun-Ra being the primary deity in its greatest phases. It was part of the ancient city of Thebes and symbolized the religious power and political prestige of the pharaonic state. The hypostyle hall, vast sacred lake, and monumental pylons are among its significant features. Karnak is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ancient Thebes with its Necropolis.
