Hampi, also known as the Group of Monuments at Hampi, lies in the Vijayanagara district of Karnataka in southern India. It was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire from 1336 to about 1565, a Hindu kingdom renowned for its wealth, grand temples, waterworks, bazaars, and markets. Today, over 1,600 remains stand across 4,100 hectares in a captivating landscape of rocky hills, riverine plains, and ruins including temples, palaces, pillars, mandapas, gateways, and water reservoirs. The site reveals sophisticated urban planning, advanced hydraulic engineering, and sacred architecture reflecting religious, economic, and social life.
