Teotihuacan, Mexico

Teotihuacan is an ancient pre-Columbian city located about 40 kilometers northeast of modern Mexico City in the State of Mexico. It flourished between about 100 BCE and 550 CE, reaching its zenith from the 1st to 5th centuries CE as a major urban, economic, cultural, and religious center in Mesoamerica. Its most famous monuments include the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon, and the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, aligned along the wide Avenue of the Dead in a well-planned grid. The city contained vast residential compounds, marketplaces, workshops, and vibrant murals, exported its obsidian tools and ceramics, and influenced distant regions.
