Mont Saint-Michel, France

Mont Saint-Michel is a tidal island and mainland commune in Normandy, France. The rocky islet is situated approximately one kilometre off the northwestern coast, at the mouth of the Couesnon River. Over many centuries, a monastic abbey and other buildings were built there, forming a vertical arrangement from the mount's summit down to supporting structures. It has striking tidal variations, as the island becomes cut off by the sea at high tide and connected by land at low tide. Because of its unique combination of natural, architectural, and historical features, Mont Saint-Michel and its bay were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979. It draws millions of visitors annually and is one of France's most iconic heritage sites.
