Tikal, Guatemala

Tikal is one of the largest and most important archaeological sites of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. It lies within the Petén Basin in northern Guatemala. The site contains extensive ruins of temples, palaces, and public plazas, many rising above the jungle canopy. Its monumental architecture dates from as early as the 4th century BC, although it reached its greatest cultural and political power between about AD 200 and 900. During its apogee, Tikal was a dominant city-state interacting with other parts of Mesoamerica, including Teotihuacan.
