Crater Lake in southern Oregon fills the caldera left when Mount Mazama collapsed after a massive eruption about 7,700 years ago. It is the deepest lake in the United States, and its intense blue comes from great depth and very clear water. Wizard Island, a small cinder cone, rises from the surface. Snow keeps much of the rim road closed for a large part of the year, so summer and early fall are the main visiting season.
