The Oculus is the centerpiece of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub in Lower Manhattan, serving as a major transit station and retail mall. Designed by world-renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the structure is intended to resemble a bird being released from a child's hands. Its exterior features white steel ribs that extend upward to form a pair of wings. The interior is a vast, white, sun-drenched hall with a retractable skylight that runs the length of the building's spine. On each September 11, the skylight is opened to allow the sun to shine directly through the center of the hall. The Oculus is both a functional infrastructure project and a work of public art, symbolizing the rebirth of the World Trade Center area following the destruction of the original complex.
