Big Sur is the rugged stretch of California's central coast where the Santa Lucia Mountains fall into the Pacific along Highway 1. Cliffs, coves, and redwood canyons continue for many miles south of Carmel, with few towns in between. Bixby Creek Bridge and McWay Falls are the best-known landmarks. Fog is common in summer, and winter storms can close the highway. Lodging is limited and usually booked ahead.
