The Maroon Bells are a pair of peaks in Colorado's Elk Mountains, near Aspen, often called the most photographed mountains in the state. Iron-rich rock gives them a deep maroon color, and Maroon Lake in front of the peaks creates the classic reflection. They lie in White River National Forest, not inside a national park. Aspen foliage in late September is the busiest time, and access to the lake is limited by shuttle in peak season.
