Mexico City (Ciudad de México, CDMX) is the capital and largest city of Mexico, located in the Valley of Mexico within the high Mexican central plateau. With an elevation of about 2,240 metres above sea level, it is one of the highest-altitude major cities in the world. The city is the country’s political, administrative, cultural and financial centre and one of Latin America’s largest metropolitan regions. Originally founded in 1325 as the Aztec city-state of Tenochtitlan, it was devastated and rebuilt during Spanish colonial rule and later became the capital of independent Mexico. Today the city is known for its rich historic heritage, large number of museums, world-class cultural institutions, and vibrant neighbourhoods, yet also faces challenges such as urban sprawl, environmental concerns and infrastructure demands.
