Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok, officially Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, is the capital and most populous city of Thailand. Located on the delta of the Chao Phraya River in central Thailand, it is a major regional hub for politics, economy, culture and transport. The city's history traces back to a trading post in the 15th century and subsequently became a royal capital in the 18th century. Today Bangkok is a megacity with an estimated population of some 10 million within its administrative boundary and more when the surrounding metropolitan region is counted. It is noted for its vibrant street life, grand temples, canals (once earning it the nickname "Venice of the East"), and rapid urban expansion. Bangkok blends traditional Thai heritage with modern infrastructure, major shopping centres, a dynamic nightlife and heavy traffic, and plays a key role in Southeast Asia's economy and tourism.
